A Poem by Our Camper, Sam

Sam attended Camp Horizons as an Explorer camper during Summer 2012 and he wrote this awesome poem about his experience. We’re sure lots of you campers can relate! Enjoy!

I woke up one morning and turned on my lamp, and with a nervous smile on my face, I started off to camp.

I got to the stop and waited so long, to get on the bus and be out and gone.

I said goodbye to my parents and also my bro as the bus pulled up and it was time for me to go.

For the first few minutes I did not know what to do, until I made my first three friends Tyler, Darius and Hugh.

As I entered my cabin, I was the last one to arrive, I almost wondered if for these two weeks I could ever survive.

Day one of camp I got all settled in, as all of the fun and games started to begin.

Day two was fun for I tried something new… and I was sure SCUBA diving was the best thing i’d ever do,

Day three had come up and more fun would be had, for I went on the canopy tour and I sure was glad!

As the days flew by and next monday came, I was excited for the next week to start all the same.

Week two came by and boy was it fun! I never hoped it would ever be done.

The evening activities were fun and all that, with a great reminder to buy a racoon skin hat!

But sooner or later everything must end, as the days flew by Saturday came right around the bend.

I gave a few hugs and said my goodbyes, as we all left to live on with our lives.

The cold, rainy day very well matched my mood, as two great weeks at camp finally had to conclude.

But as those few weeks of camp fade into the past, know that your memories will everlast.

And although that for now your are sad and will have to make do… there’s always next year where camp will start anew!

What Camp Means to Session 2 Campers

At the end of the 2nd session, we asked our campers to write down what camp means to them. A complete list of what they wrote can be found below! We miss you already, Session 2 campers!!

  • A break from where people are rude and judgemental and everyone is family.
  • An escape.
  • Somewhere where we can meet very good friends; somewhere magic.
  • Camp is home, my best friends and pure happiness.
  • Adding new people to my family.
  • Camp means everything to me.
  • A break from where people are rude and judgemental and everyone is family.
  • You form a family at CH, with counsellors, cabin mates and friends.
  • Camp is too special to me because of all the people.
  • I made a home away from home.
  • Just there is something about here that makes it feel like home.
  • This is my first week ever and I want to stay forever.
  • It is my home when I am not at home.
  • I’ve been here for 3 years and it is a place that I go every summer to have the best 1 or 2 weeks of my summer. It is FUN!
  • To me camp means a place where you can be yourself but still step out of your comfort zone.
  • Where my real friends are.
  • Where you are accepted for whatever you do or who you are.
  • Camp Horizons means all the funny and great things to me.
  • Camp is a very special place that is a lot of fun, the campers are brothers and sisters and the counsellors are like the parents.
  • Camp makes me smile.
  • Where I can be me.
  • Camp is a very special place. You can build an archery target or a swimming pool but this has a very positive energy where they want you to be yourself and have fun.
  • Camp means home, fun and best friends.
  • FUN
  • That no matter who you are, you have the right to be you.
  • Home away from home.
  • Awesome, cool, some place I can call home.
  • A place I can make new friends and where I can see old friends and have fun.
  • Camp is a totally different place from where I live and it’s very enjoyable.
  • Everything in the world.
  • Camp means a lot to me, without it I wouldn’t have met by best friends.
  • Having FUN!
  • Camp means making new friends.
  • An awesome fun place where you can make a bunch of friends.
  • Somewhere where I can ride horses and other cool stuff.
  • Camp means to me meeting new friends and having fun.
  • I have a place where I can be myself and a place where I can do lots of activities and a place where I can come back and meet new friends.
  • A place where being me means I am important.
  • Community.
  • Camp Horizons is the awesomest thing ever!
  • Camp is special to me because I make a lot of BFFs.
  • Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!
  • Home.
  • Never ending fun!
  • The sense of community.
  • Happiness, friends, acceptance.
  • Getting to try new activities and making new friends.
  • New friends.

Happy Summer Solstice!

Today is the Summer Solstice! For people who live in the Northern Hemisphere of the world, today is the longest day of the year and the first official day of summer. In the Arctic Circle, there will be 24 hours of daylight!

The summer solstice occurs when the Earth’s axial tilt is closest to the sun. This occurs in late June for the Northern Hemisphere and late December for the Southern Hemisphere. The summer solstice is a significant time for many religions and cultures. Today, people all over the world will mark this important milestone in the year with festivals, gatherings, and rituals.

To celebrate the summer solstice, grab your sunglasses and head outside to enjoy the extra hours of daylight! We are excited to see many of our campers come back to their “home away from home” as well as new ones that have chosen Camp Horizons. We still have few spots available so help us make this the best summer yet, our 30th summer.

Happy Summer to everyone!
